Afro-rave is essentially Rema's interpretation of Afrobeats pushed into a more experimental, atmospheric and rave-influenced direction. Rema himself described it as his perception of Afrobeats and as a subgenre built around melody, delivery, diversity and flexibility.
It isn't simply "Afrobeats + electronic music." The interesting part is the freedom from a fixed Afrobeats formula.
Some common characteristics are:
Dark or hypnotic melodies
Unusual vocal melodies and phrasing
Heavy use of percussion and bass
Afrobeats rhythms mixed with trap, house, dancehall, pop and other influences
Occasional Middle Eastern, Indian and other non-West-African melodic influences
A strong rave/club energy, even when the song itself isn't an EDM track
Lyrics and imagery that can feel psychedelic, romantic, rebellious or surreal
A willingness to switch rhythms and structures rather than stay inside conventional Afrobeats arrangements
Rema's early records such as "Dumebi," "Iron Man," "Why," "Lady" and later material like "Soundgasm" demonstrate different sides of the concept. His 2024 album HEIS pushed the darker, percussion-heavy side much further.
